4 Best Practice Tips for Summer Protective Hairstyles

Summer is the perfect time for protective hairstyles. Natural braids styles and braids with extensions are the most common styles during the summer months. After leaving the stylist, many clients don’t have clear understanding on how to maintain the health of their hair while their hair is in a protective style for the summer. Here are 4 best practice tips that will keep your hair healthy this summer:

Tip #1: Keep your extension in your hair for only 4-6 weeks.

We know that clients put extension in their hair for time sake. We know that they are called extension but, don’t extend the life of your extension longer than the recommended time frame. If you keep your extension longer than the recommended time frame, you put your hair at risk for shedding, dryness, and breakage.

Tip #2: Use Special Shampoo for your hair.

During the summer, most clients go to the beach and pools for a nice swim or for swimming lessons. You will need special Shampoo during the summer to clean your hair properly from any harshness that the water may have done to your hair. Remember, Chlorine is a drying agent to the hair and you will need the right shampoo to keep it from drying the hair out.  Here at Art Tech Studio we recommend two shampoos that will help the health of your hair:

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three

Helps remove chlorine and impurities from your hair. It increase inner strength and prevent immediate re-deposit. It is ideal for swimmers to beat the “chlorine green”.

Naked Detox Clarifying Shampoo

It thoroughly cleanses the hair without stripping it of much needed moisture. This shampoo will keep your hair hydrated and helps to prevent dryness and breakage.

Tip #3: Make sure your hair is completely dry.

When hair is wet, it can be very hard to dry the hair especially if you have in braids ( with or without extension). Make sure to take a little extra time to blow dry the hair to prevent bacteria and fungus from growing. Your hair will thank you!

Tips #4: Keep naturally braided hair in for only 2-3 weeks

That’s right; naturally braided hair has a recommended expiration date too. You don’t want to keep your hair in longer than the recommended time frame because you will put your hair at risk of getting mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungus. You should be extra mindful if you are going swimming this summer because you’re more at risk especially if you don’t properly maintain the health of your hair after swimming.

Just because your braids or extension still look good doesn’t mean that it is good for them to overstay their welcome. We hope you keep these tips in mind this summer when comes to maintaining your protective hairstyle.
